Learn About the TOEFL
The TOEFL is an entrance exam used by several top schools to ascertain international students’ aptitude within the English language. The test is used to determine the language abilities of non-native English speaker by testing abilities in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. The exam is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), and is offered at several different locations around the country. The test was originally a paper-based exam, but was later changed into a computer initiated test. While paper-based tests are still available, the preferred method is computer-based. The test is four hours in length and can be taken a maximum of once a week. TOEFL scores stay valid for only two years. Since its inception in 1964, the TOELF test has been taken by over 20 million students.
The IBT consists of a 4 hour test in 4 sections which covers:
- Reading – students are given a reading passage and then posed questions about the content they have just read
- Listening – students are given a passage to listen only once and are asked questions about the conversation
- Speaking – students read passages and answer questions on a variety of subjects. These replies are digitally recorded and sent to exam judges to be tested.
- Writing – students are given a passage and then asked to write a passage in response to the text
- The TOEFL can take up to 4 hours to complete, and students are given optional 10 minute breaks.

Learn About the ISEE ®?
The ISEE, or Independent School Entrance Examination, is utilized for private middle and high school admissions. Achieving success on this test is crucial if you aspire to enroll in a prestigious private middle or high school.
When can I take it, and how do I sign up?
The ISEE is offered several times a year, with most testing dates in the fall and early winter. The number of available test dates depends on your location, and you can only take the ISEE once every six months. Register now.
Wondering about the difference between the SSAT® and the ISEE? Both are used for private school admission, testing Vocabulary, Math, and Reading Comprehension. Many schools accept either test, so you can choose the one that fits you best. The key distinction is in how they assess skills. The ISEE tests vocabulary with synonyms and sentence completion, while the SSAT uses synonyms and analogies. ISEE reading passages are longer, but the SSAT covers a wider range of genres, including poetry. The ISEE places more emphasis on mathematical reasoning compared to the SSAT. If both are accepted by your chosen schools, pick the one that suits your abilities.
The Middle Level Exam is given to students applying for entrance to seventh or eighth grade, while the Upper Level Exam is given to students applying for entrance to ninth, tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade. The Middle Level and Upper Level exams have the same number of questions, and they are both 2 hours and 40 minutes long.
You can take the ISEE at approved ERB member schools, Prometric locations, or ERB’s NYC office. Note that online administration at Prometric is available only for grades 5-12. Register online, by mail, or by phone. Test dates vary by year and location. The registration fee depends on your chosen registration and testing methods. Visit the ERB website to learn more about ISEE registration.
Each question on the ISEE holds equal value. Your raw score is based solely on the number of correct answers, as there is no penalty for incorrect responses. Therefore, it’s encouraged for students to guess rather than leave questions unanswered.
The ISEE report will provide various sets of scores and percentiles。
Each section’s raw score is transformed into a scaled score. For the Lower, Middle, and Upper Level exams, the scaled score ranges from 760 to 940.
Schools receive percentile scores, calculated from a 3-year rolling norm pool of applicants to the same grade, irrespective of gender. This allows them to evaluate your standing compared to other students. Your score report includes these percentile scores, along with stanines and a stanine analysis representing the percentiles.
For more details on scoring for different ISEE Levels, check the ERB website and refer to the ISEE Student Guide and the What To Expect On The ISEE resources.
